Woman falls for online scam, loses $25K

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — After falling for an online scam from a fake boyfriend promising to send her $1 million, a woman is out $25,000.

The 41-year-old woman told deputies she started dating a man online who messaged her through Facebook. The man said he would send her a crate with $1 million in it, but he needed $25,000 for shipping first.

She sent him the money over several transactions and transferred the money into a bank account in West Africa. She was told the crate was held up at the JFK Airport and she needed to send another $49,000 to receive it. That was when she realized she was getting scammed.

She was advised to contact the sheriff’s office if she received any packages or if her “boyfriend” contacted her again.
